This morning I went for a run
after fasting all day yesterday.
I was slow
and it was cold, colder than it’s been in a long time, maybe 50 degrees –
cold enough to turn the crickets down to a whisper.
The night’s cool, quiet air
still pooled in the shadows under the trees,
the sun just coming up,
warming the ground in patches.
The smell of daylight rises from the earth,
warm and bright.
Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in.
