post-wilderness experiments

Here are three experiments for you to try, inspired by a week in the wilderness:

  1. Carry your trash — Instead of throwing things out wherever you are, carry a bag with you for a day to see just how much garbage you generate, and what’s in it. Try to make it less, and do it again in a month to see if you’ve succeeded.
  2. No electric lights — Try to live without using electric lights for a day. Notice how pervasive they are (in your refrigerator). How would your life be different if you rose and set with the sun? Would it be better? Worse?
  3. No mirrors — Don’t look at yourself for a day. Instead, try to see the beauty in yourself through the eyes of others… and be a mirror yourself: reflect back to others the beauty you see in them.
