There were a few new birds in our yard today – a
northern (yellow-shafted) flicker at the feeder, and a
mourning dove underneath. Last week I saw a
pileated woodpecker, but he hasn’t returned yet. The funny thing
is, even though I’ve put up a suet feeder, the woodpeckers still
go for the sunflower seeds. Only squirrels and chickadees eat the
peanut-butter suet, but they eat everything.
I tried smearing some of my “suet” on a tree trunk, but so far only
the squirrels have found it. Based on what I read about the flicker
(being a ground feeder), I’m going to try scattering some raisins
on the ground to see if that brings him back.
