Cold. A metallic tang to the air, not brassy, not steel, but subdued,
dull, a little chalky – like brushed aluminum. It’s a good day to
stay indoors and look at primary colors: a bright yellow, a vivid
red, a deep blue like the red in
this painting (The Red Studio) by Henri Matisse.
But that’s clinging to summer. The challenge is to find life in the
washed-out, graying colors of November – or maybe not in the colors,
but in the vertical strength of a trunk with bare, upswept branches;
in the lines of a senseless tangle of fallen grass.
