Today I found a sweet woodruff sprout like a tiny green star under the leaves. Our lettuce sprouts are up, but not getting any bigger, their lives suspended by snow and cold. The rhubarb is still growing, poking up at least half a dozen new leaves, but nothing’s so vibrant as our weeds – creeping charlie and dandelions getting another headstart over everything.

The neighborhood deer have already shaved every bud from the pussy willow stalks I stuck in the ground less than a week ago
. It looks like I’ll have to get another cage until the bushes can get established.

Tonight there’s a whiff of snow on the wind, but most of it should fall well south of us.
