Jenny and I went on a little photo excursion today, an excuse to walk in the winter. The air is still cold, but the sun so bright it warms you inside. You can feel the sap flowing again.
We came across a congregation of about fifty black-jacketed birds: crows, grackles and I think the smallest were starlings. They were in animated discussion, flying back and forth, chortling. I couldn’t see any obvious reason for their numbers – no food, no enemy. They just seemed to be enjoying each other’s company on a Sunday afternoon.
