I had a very different view of the Mississippi today, from high up a building in downtown St. Paul.

In St. Paul the river valley is much deeper than in Minneapolis, with steep limestone bluffs to the west, and a dramatic turn where it runs up against more bluffs to the east. The city, the river, railroads and sandbars share the space in between. Prohibition-era caves mark the base of the western bluffs; Indian burial mounds mark the tops to the east.
