More raspberries yesterday, and sunflowers and thistles from our birdseed have begun to bloom. I only wish there were more of them.

Jenny spotted a black swallowtail caterpillar
on one of our dill plants, and a cicada
 (genus Diceroprocta
, I think) resting among the snapdragons. Listen to it here
.

Nothing says dog days of summer… long, lazy afternoons of hot, hazy sun… like the sound of cicadas.

Which makes today all the more unusual. It is cool and dry and clear like a bright day in early September, after the State Fair. But this is exceptional. 90-degree temperatures and high humidity are just around the corner, I am sure.

Dusk fell last night under a greenish light, underwater, as if it were already gone, and what I was seeing was just the memory of it, darkened and faded by time.
