Aging sunlight flattened the sky, and then the clouds disappeared altogether. Again, only a faint, unleavened disk of moon remains.

But I know where the color, where the depth went. This evening we drove along the Minnesota River, with high water a bottomless blue and the still-brown reeds and grasses grasping a tint of summer yellow. Ducks floated near or flew far, marking the motions of air and water.

Solid ground is merely implied in a wetland, never confirmed.
